Description
The House was dark until he found a key is a performance and installation centered on a small temporary building that when occupied becomes a performance space, simultaneously lit from inside and out, it’s public function both to conceal and reveal through the interior and exterior worlds.
The House Was Dark… takes the performance-house as metaphor for a metaphysical journey. The temporary building, discovered like a UFO landed in a public space, represents a myriad of possibilities that the audience experience with growing degrees of technical sophistication until it finally rejects the public in favour of an opulent special-effects future.

Structure
Winning Productions will present the The House Was Dark… inside the magnificent St. Kevins Arcade on Karangahape Road in Auckland, coinciding with the Auckland Fringe Festival 2013 in February. This architectural gem from the 1920s is an ideal location for a dialogue between public and private space. The timing of the Fringe Festival invites access to an open-minded public as well as national and international festival programmers who will be in town for AK13 in order to follow up on earlier expressions of interest.
The theatre-house is approximately 3m x 5m x 3.5m tall (roughly the size of a large-ish carparking space and the height of a domestic house) and can be set up easily in one day.
